The abundance of Renewable Energy sources in South Africa, coupled with skyrocketing energy prices has created an awakening giant in the form of small scale Renewable Energy harvesting. Many of these new technologies are becoming financially viable options for many businesses and private individuals. 

The Nelson Mandela University in conjunction with the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University have assembled a suite of short courses to educate individuals in the field of Renewable Energy.

Each course is offered intensively over a 5 day period and is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for Continuous Professional Development points.

Note: These short courses do not lead to qualifications or part – qualifications registered on the NQF.

1. Renewable Energy Technology 25 Feb-01 Mar 2019; 19-23 Aug 2019

2. Wind Energy 06-10 May 2019; 21-25 Oct 2019

3. Photovoltaic Technologies 2019 Dates still to be determined.

4. Certified Renewable Energy Professional: Dates available on ENTF website below* 25-28 Nov 2019

* Note this course is offered over 4 days with an examination on day 4.

All candidates must have a scientific background.

Please note that all courses are engineering based.


  • 4 short (20 minutes) multiple choice tests.
  • 1 general test (to cover to entire course content - roughly 45 minutes).
  • 1 group assignment with assessed presentation (to be delivered on the last day).

What you need to bring with you:

All attendees are required to bring their own laptop.  Calculators are optional.

What you will receive:

  • Lunch
  • Refreshments during the day
  • Pen and Paper
  • NMU SLP Certificate of completion (Given that a pass mark was achieved) or a NMU Certificate of Attendance (If the pass mark was not achieved).  The certificate will be posted.

Course fees are not refundable unless cancellation has been made at least seven days before the start of course.  A 30% administration fee is then levied for cancellations.  Should the course be fully booked or cancelled by the NMMU, a full refund of fees will be made.


NB: NMU reserves the right to cancel or postpone courses if numbers are not sufficient.


Delegates attending the August 2015 Renewable Energy Technology course.     They visited a local wind farm. The intensive 5 day courses include a number of site visits and hands on lab activities mixed with class presentations.
