A team of matric boys from Port Rex Technical High School in East London sailed home with R10,000 in cash and a pirate’s chest of other treasure, during the weekend’s inaugural Nelson Mandela University Solar Boat Competition in Gqeberha on Saturday, 4 March. 

 

Supported by South African higher education partners, the University of Warwick and Warwick Racing in the United Kingdom, E-Movement, and Paramount Global as its official launch media partner, launched Formula Student Africa (FSA)  on 25 February at the Cape Town E-Fest ELECTRIC with the mission to become the leading advocate for electric mobility on the continent.

Nelson Mandela University’s School of Engineering recently supported ocean research with airborne drones and a kite borne surveillance system to study marine mammals up close - not possible from the research ship.

Mandela University’s Mechatronics department - in collaboration with Siemens South Africa - recently assisted two TVET colleges with 20 commissioned stations for the training of educators and students to learn industrial control programming principles.
2022 IMTS - Chicago

The 2022 IMTS (International Manufacturing Trade Show) was held early in September at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, and the AEDG were represented there by our innovative Additively Manufactured Golf Putter.

Prof Theo van Niekerk, from the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, drives Siemens Automation Cooperates with Education with us by building the SCE bundles into ready-to-use training sets and then enables the lecturers of African colleges and universities via train-the-trainer on SCE training documents to use the SCE content for their own courses in their own classrooms. 

Nelson Mandela University became the first university in South Africa to legally operate drones. This achievement brought it a step closer to realising its vision of offering a diverse range of life-changing educational experiences for a better world.

SCE Training

The Advanced Mechatronics Technology Centre (AMTC) recently hosted  Universities from South, West to East Africa in presenting a Siemens Automation Cooperates with Education (SCE) Training programme.  The AMTC is an accredited service provided to Siemens to provide industry standard training in Factory Automation and Drives to the Manufacturing and Related Engineering Industries within the Eastern Cape.

In a first of its kind, the biennial international BRICS Skills Challenge 2020 took place in a virtual online format, and Nelson Mandela University student Jacques Welgemoed (23) was part of the experience.

The Damas guesthouse in the remote Riemvasmaak area in the Northern Cape, which received its first off-grid facility from Nelson Mandela University two years ago, now boasts a larger pumping system as well as an off grid power supply system for lighting.
